The Center for Strategic Studies if glad to announce the publication of the Joint Policy Study Migrants and refugees: impact and future policies. Case studies of Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Greece.

The research represents the final output of a 1 year-project coordinated by the Center for Strategic in the role of co-applicant leader in partnership with the EuroMeSCo (Euro-Mediterranean Study Commission) and IEMed (European Institute of the Mediterranean). The project was articulated within the EuroMediterranean Political Research and Dialogue for Inclusive Policymaking Processes and Dissemination through Network Participation action with the support of the European Union as interested body and stakeholder in the research findings.

The research was conducted through approximately 12 months starting from June 2015 and involved further European and Middle-eastern research institutions and universities leading to the conduction of co-joint studies that are now published within the EuroMesco Join Policy Study series.

In particular scholars who actively participated to the project were affiliated to the Institute for European Studies (University of Malta), Centre for Economic Research on Mediterranean Countries (CREM) (Akdeniz University), Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), European University Institute, IEMed.

The aim of the project was to provide policy-oriented research able to disseminate results and findings that could scientifically support interested bodies and stakeholders in their decision making. In details, all actors agreed on the need of investigation of migration flows in the Mediterranean Area.

Due to its directly communicative nature the project was articulated on a series of events and meetings aimed to promote and exchange feedback and promote mutual reviewing between the authors and the potential interested bodies affiliated to European and Middle Eastern bodies. On December 2015 the project was presented and discussed at the European Commission. Following that, the Center for Strategic Studies hosted and promoted the Dialogue Workshop that was attended by valuable stakeholders affiliated to NGOs (e.g. UNHCR, WFP), Government bodies (e.g. Jordan Ministry of Planning and International cooperation) further research institutions and universities
(e.g. AGREEM – Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, European Institute for Security Studies) who provided useful feedback for the development of the research.

On March 2016 the Center for Strategic Studies promoted the Local Presentation in order to capillary disseminate the final results to a local and larger audience made up of stakeholders like policy-makers, journalists, NGOs coordinators and academics.

(if needed, this is the summary of the JPS)

The Joint Policy Study focuses on migrants and refugees’ population in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Malta, Spain and Italy and their status in these Mediterranean transit and destination countries. Each chapter targets specific case-study by employing a policy-oriented approach and discussing potential future scenarios both in each specific country both in the all Mediterranean area. The first chapter investigates specific patterns of migration flows in the interested areas by tracing origins, motivations, qualifications, intentions, and life expectations of migrants in pursuing their willingness to move from the home country.

The second and third chapter represents a socio-economic analysis of the impact of the Syrian crisis in terms of labour market challenges and future integration respectively in Jordan and Lebanon and Turkey. The fourth chapter critically takes into account the migration-policies and emergencies faced by Greece, Italy and Spain in managing the huge amount of migrant flows they daily receive.

Remarkable policy recommendations are evidenced in conclusion of the study in order to provide ready-to-use information to interested policy makers.
